The Vision of Escaflowne series has many reasons to be considered great. However in my mind, the music of Escaflowne is what sets it apart. The range of music truly conveys the emotions of the series. Listening to the album you can close your eyes and picture the exact moment from the show that the song was made for. The uplifting themes like Poketto wo karanishite really make you feel the joy as must have been felt by the characters. The more somber pieces akin to Deja Blue and Romance convey the strife and despair that the actual series deals with. The album starts with Yakusoku wa iranai(I Don't Need a Promise), the song used in the opening. Yakusoku wa iranai is one of my all time favorites. A vocal track sung by Maaya Sakamoto whose voice is simply incredible. The track is a joyous romp that almost seems to tell the tale of escaflowne itself.

The uplifting adventurous spirit of the album is carried throughout songs like Flying Dragon and takes a darker turn with Murder and Dance of the Curse. After going through a couple of tracks you get to Angel which almost sounds as if sung by angels. After a few more songs you come to Poketta wo karanshite. Which is simply a song of pure happiness. The vocals, the music, the lyrics all end themselves to a feel you have on one of those days where everything is just perfect. Every time I hear it I picture Merle wandering through a village with a basket full of food on her way to see Van. The peaceful village happy and bustling with no worries at all.

The very next song, White Dove, is one of the most eccentric songs on the album. The beginning makes me think of waking up in a forest. The horn just makes it seem like morning in a vast mist covered forest. Then the clapping sound comes in and the rest of the instruments kick in. Almost as if the sun has risen and day has begun. After that the vocal begins and the feeling a gloomy morning turned into a bright sunny afternoon really takes over. The guitar solo is really great as well. The song is one of better cheerful songs on an album chock full of em.

Of course, to my dismay, the TV ending Mystic Eyes is included on the album. The song performed by Hiroki Wada is probably my least favorite on the album. I'm not too fond of his voice. The guitar is very good. I think if the voice was a slightly higher pitch I'd like the song better. The chorus tends to give me a headache as well. The accent is not favorable when pronouncing Mystic Eyes. Thankfully this song does not end the album Deja Blue is the last song. It has a very music box sound to it. It's a very nice short piece that has a very very expresses a very depressed emotion. It is probably the second most powerful song behind Yakusoku wa iranai.

All in all Escaflowne over the Sky is one of my favorite albums. It's worth getting simply for Yakusoku wa iranai. The range of music from incredibly uplifting to very depressing is a nice mix. This is some of Yoko Kanno's best work in my opinion.
