Come July 24th Akira will be seeing a re-release in North America. Pioneer was the company to begin the remaster of this classic. Initially looking to produce 75,000 copies of the special edition 2-disc DVD they were overwhelmed by demand and decided to produce 100,000. This has still failed to be enough. However, the special edition is limited to 100,000 copies which have already been sold.

All is not lost though, Pioneer Will release the 2-disc version in the regular packaging as well as the one disc with only the movie and Japanese/English soundtrack. If you lack a DVD player, there will be a dubbed (read:DUBBED) version fo the movie available on VHS.

The two-disk Special Edition includes a documentary on the making of the film, a feature on the process of restoration, another documentary on the creation of the new soundtrack for the film, and lots of other special features. So keep a lookout or you may miss out.
