The 2009 combined #2/3 issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine has confirms that a long-delayed new Urusei Yatsura anime special will premiere at the "It's a Rumic World" exhibition in Sendai, Japan on December 23. The special will be the first animated spinoff from the series in 17 years, and shown exclusively at the exhibition, which is centered on Takahashi's artwork.

The exhibition itself began over the summer in Tokyo, debuting new Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2 animated specials. However, the Urusei Yatsura special was not finished in time for the summer.

In the special, Fumi Hirano once again reprises her role as the legendary invader Lum, who ends up marrying the lecherous Ataru Moroboshi (Toshio Furukawa) through a series of mistakes in a game to determine the fate of the planet. Hirano played Lum across 195 TV series episodes, one television special, 6 theatrical films, and 11 OVAs, spanning more than a decade.

Hirano and Furukawa returned to their classic characters in a separate opening animation clip used in the exhibition - a crossover clip including main characters from Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, and Inuyasha.
