Kodansha's Magazine Special announced that Getbackers creators Yuya Aoki and Rando Ayamine are currently in the planning phases of a new project. The announcement appeared at the end of a one-shot GetBackers story created by Aoki and Ayamine. The original GetBackers ran in Kodamsha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1999-2007, and spanned 39 volumes. The title led to a 49-episode television series, as well as several video games. Over 18 million GetBackers books have been sold to date.

TOKYOPOP currently holds the rights to the GetBackers manga in North America, while ADV holds the rights to the anime.
