Bandai held a press conference to announce the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam. The press conference also served to unveil plans to celebrate the milestone with the Mobile Suit Gundam 30th Anniversary Project. The Mobile Suit Gundam 30th Anniversary Project will contain three major phases.

The first phase, named the "Real-G" phase, will revolve around the erection of a 59-foot (18-meter) statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam. The statue will be built in Shiokaze Park on Odaiba, and will stand for two months. The second phase, named "Feel G", will consist of a commemorative convention known at the Gundam Big Expo. The convention will be held from August 21 to 23 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center. The final phase, named "Soul G", a commemorative live concert to celebrate Gundam's anniversary. Currently, no dates have been set.

When asked about the possibility of a commemorative television series, Bandai President and CEO Kazunori Ueno stated that the company has no plans to produce a Mobile Suit Gundam television series this year. Instead, a short movie will be produced to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. The film will debut at the Gundam Big Expo convention this August.
