Yuu Watase announced that she will delay the return of her Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden manga series until spring 2010. Watase explained the push as the result of her physical condition, combined with the work schedule for her other titles. She apologized for the delay and asked for her readers' patience and understanding. Watase also mentioned that a fan book will be released this coming summer.

Watase created Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden as a spinoff of her Fushigi Yuugi manga in 2003. Shogakukan published nine volumes since the series' debut. In 2008, Watase announced that the title would go on hiatus.

Viz Media currently holds the rights to Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden, and will release the 8th volume in North America in April.
