Handley Pleads Guilty To Possession Charges
The United States Department of Justice reports that Christopher Handley pleaded guilty to the possession of "drawings of children being sexually abused." Handley faces a punishment that consists of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Currently, Handley does not have a scheduled date for his sentencing.
Handley was arrested in May 2006 under allegations of receiving obscene manga via the United States Postal Service, as well as possession of said manga. In Handley's case, the judge dismissed a number of charges against Handley and ruled parts of the PROTECT Act of 2003 unconstitutional for violations of the First Amendment. Handley still faced charges of possession, because the manga was moved "via interstate commerce."
The case gained the attention of a number of critics, including Newbery Medal winner Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, The Graveyard Book) and Eisner Award nominee Jason Thompson (Manga: The Complete Guide).
