For its opening weekend in the United States, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Ponyo movie earned an estimated $3,506,000 and hit 9th on the box office chart. Showing in 927 theaters, the film has earned an estimated per-screen average of $3,782.

With these initial numbers, Ponyo is already the 8th highest grossing anime film to receive theatrical release in the United States, beating Princess Mononoke, Pokemon 4Ever, and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Ponyo has been given a wider release and seen a stronger opening weekend than Ghibli's previous three American theatrical releases.
