FUNimation announced that they acquired the rights to the Initial D anime, the X TV series, and X OVA.

In the Initial D license, FUNimation snagged the following series:

  • Initial D First stage
  • Initial D Second stage
  • Initial D Extra stage
  • Initial D Third stage
  • Initial D Fourth stage

Initial D was originally released by TOKYOPOP, with a dub that drastically altered the show and eliminated most of the Eurobeat soundtrack. FUNimation will redub the series with a new cast, rather than use TOKYOPOP's material. In addition, FUNimation's release will include the Eurobeat music.

X was originally released in the west by Pioneer Animation, and spanned 24 episodes. The X OVA is a single-episode preview of the TV series. Both the X TV series and OVA were directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Cyber City Oedo 808, Ninja Scroll).

The first part of each title will hit DVD next year.
