Maryland's Wicomico County Public Schools announced that they will remove the first volume of the Dragon Ball manga from the Pittsville Elementary and Middle School's library this week, following a county council member demonstrating "sexual" content in the book. Council member Joe Holloway described that, "In cartoon format, [the manga volume] depicts nudity, sexual contact between children and sexual innuendo among adults and children," following notice from a mother of a nine-year-old fourth-grader who borrowed the book.

Wicomico Schools Superintendent John Fredericksen followed that by saying, "I'd say it's coming off the shelves as soon as I can get a phone call back to the office." He also stated that graphic novels appeal to children not reading traditional books, and the manga was probably purchased using grant funding. The final decision was left to a committee.
