Publishers Weekly reports that Viz Media laid off up to 55 employees at its San Francisco headquarters. In addition, Viz closed its New York branch, which was run by employees.

The layoffs represent roughly 40% of Viz's total workforce. Viz confirmed the layoffs, but not the numbers, with Publishers Weekly on Tuesday.

Viz previously restructured in February 2009 with a round of layoffs.
