Anime News Network reports that actor and voice director Peter Fernandez succumbed to lung cancer this morning. He was 83.

Fernandez is best known for his roles in Speed Racer as Speed and Racer X, among other characters. Fernandez also directed the voice cast and wrote the lyrics to the show's theme song. In addition, Fernandez provided voices for Lupin, Jigen, and President Jimmy Carter in JAL's dub of Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo.

Fernandez appeared in over 200 productions, that spanned from anime to Broadway to radio. A public service will be held in September in Fernandez's hometown of Pomona, New York.
