A new computer-animated anime series based on Masamune Shirow's Appleseed was recently green-lit for production. The 13-episode series, titled Appleseed XIII, will be a separate story from the two films directed by Shinji Aramaki (Megazone 23, Bubblegum Crisis). After the show's run, two feature-length films that compile the series's episodes will be released.

Takayuki Hamana (The Prince of Tennis, Beast Player Erin) is currently slated to direct the series, which will be animated by Procution I.G. Junichi Fujisaku (Video Girl Ai, Thost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig) will supervise and co-write the show's scripts. Mechanical designs will be done by Atsushi Takeuchi, who also provided the films' mecha designs.

The project will be produced by Micott & Basara, who also produced the previous two Appleseed films. The company originally announced a TV series based on the franchise in 2008 in cooperation with Radix Mobanimation. However, production was suspended, and Radix sued Micott & Basara for alleged withholding of payment.

Appleseed XIII will see a strictly direct-to-video release, and will not air on television networks.
