Anime News Network reports that Media Blasters laid off sixty percent of its staff earlier today. According to Media Blasters CEO John Sirabella, the company's staff was reduced to five or six full-time employees, from fifteen. Sirabella stated that the company plans to ask the former staff members to continue working as freelancers, though he doesn't expect everybody to agree to such terms.

Sirabella was quoted as saying that "all of the small publishers are going through this sort of thing right now. Not just anime. Everyone's transitioning from full-time staff to freelancers."

The company plans to maintain the same output they had prior to the layoffs. In the near future, the company expects to release Blu-Ray versions of Kite and the first season of Squid Girl on February 28 and March 13, respectively.
