Please Teacher!, Volume 2: Meet the In-Laws
Class is back in session as Mizuho and Kei get for a second installment of Please Teacher. The second disc continues the romantic, yet humorous misadventures of Kei and Mizuho as they try to find married bliss while avoiding the scandal pages, and bring a few hilarious moments with into the mix as well.
Summer's started and classes have ended. What started as a beach-bound honeymoon for Kei and Mizuho quickly becomes an exercise in self-control as the two have a run-in with all of Kei's friends on a strange coincidence. Now, Kei needs to keep his lips shut about his marriage, while avoiding the prying ears of his classmates and Herikawa's advances? The second episode sees a return to normalcy... somewhat. Kei and Mizuho have returned from their trip, and everything seems to be going smoothly again. However, this is quickly interrupted by the surprise visit of Mizuho's mother and sister. Now, Kei has to help an unusually sullen Hyosuke, while avoiding the advances of Mizuho's mother Hatsuho, and the death threats of Mizuho's sister Maho. The third and final episode places Kei into a compromising position. A seemingly innocent meeting with Herikawa goes awry when Mizuho catches the two in an awkward position. Maho witnesses what looks like a situation that made her older sister cry. In a fit of rage, Maho drags Kei to an isolated landscape, and says a few words that pierce poor Kei like a dagger and throw him into a standstill. Now Mizuho must find some way to wake him up before she loses him for what could be a long time.
Please Teacher seems to be the type of series that starts strong and keeps getting better with each passing episode. I can't help but feel myself becoming more attached to the cast with each installment. Everything seems to be coming together as relationships are created, and others are put in jeopardy. However, nothing ever becomes too serious since a shot of humor is given to lighten most situations.
This second volume keeps up the high standard that the first volume created. The transfer is clear, with vibrant colors and no cross-coloration. Aliasing, rainbows, and macroblocking are nowhere to be found. The "washed out" scenes that were a minor issue in the last volume are also gone, creating an even stronger visual presentation. The sound holds the same quality with clear audio in both the English and Japanese audio tracks, with no distortion or dropouts.
In terms of presentation, Bandai has delivered another fine offering to anime fans everywhere. While the menu is nearly identical to the first disc's, there are no complaints as navigation is both fast and simple. The extras present another set of interesting pieces. "Music Clip #1" is a montage of animations that are played with the ending theme to the show. Also included is a short trailer for the Japanese market, and the standard textless opening and closing. The design gallery offers several pieces of production artwork that revolve around Hatsuho, Maho, Hyosuke, and Kaede. The packaging features a picture of Mizuho in a sweater that was also used for the second Japanese DVD. The back features a return of the "notebook" setup, with a description of the disc's contents and extras accompanied by a few screens of the show, and a black and white picture of Mizuho. On the other side of the cover is an alternate cover that features a picture of Kaede and the original Japanese logo. The insert contains a return of the cover artwork, and folds out to a miniature poster of Kei and Mizuho. The side panels of the insert feature production and cast lists, and an advertisement for the Onegai Teacher manga series.
In the last review, I said that Please Teacher had potential to be an excellent series. I'm very happy to see this potential being realized as the show continues to improve with each episode. Hopefully, the show can keep up the pace it's at for another two volumes.
