Mushi are lifeforms that are said to be purer than others — intimately tied with the life force of the planet. Few people can see or otherwise discern them.

Mushi masters (i.e. mushi-shi) like the main character, Ginko, study mushi and their effects on humans, and develop treatments that separate the mushi from a human host when the effects of the bond are harmful.
