Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Volume 3
The third volume of Stardust Memory begins by taking an 80-degree nosedive in the originality department and an uncontrollable flat spin toward certain doom in dialogue. Some important discoveries are made by the characters in this three episode volume, but those discoveries are concealed from the viewer, which eliminates any interest in what has happened. Though the secret partially comes to fruition at the end of the volume, not enough is revealed to spur interest. In other words, it was a surprise that actually hurt the flow of the story. On top of that, a tragedy happens in this volume that's so lacking in drama, it's hard to care about. On the other hand, the scene is a testament to how bad things can happen for no reason.
The show does recover from its problem somewhat, with great action scenes and good voice acting. The dialogue is laughably cheesy in some places, but in others it bears a sign of intelligence. The story of the third volume is a continuation of Uraki's pursuit of Gato. The volume ends without anything being settled between the two, and the true purpose of Operation Stardust is not yet realized. In a way, it's a good set up for what hopefully will be a spectacular finish.
Volume three sports new opening and closing sequences, and the music for both is a small step up in quality from the previous two volumes. The rest of the music is more of the same: a good ol' fashioned 80s product. Video and audio quality in volume three pretty much stayed par with the first two volumes of the series.
The packaging showed both a degradation and an improvement over the past volume. Its cover has an uninspiring shot of the two Gundams and the three main characters on the front, but the cover is reversible, displaying a sweet picture of the Gundams going at it. Extras on the disc include the usual mobile suit encyclopedia, and textless versions for the second opening sequence and the second closing sequence.
It's difficult to say that this volume is worth watching, but the staging that takes place for the next volume does have me interested in seeing the series to its finish. Also, the first two volumes were enjoyable enough that the show can be forgiven for the third, if it turns out that the fourth is really worth it.
